I've been stuck on this problem for the last two days. What am I missing? Any help would be awesome guys.

An open rectangular box with a square bottom must have a surface area of A square inches. Write a formula for the volume of the box as a function of x. Your answer will also include the constant, A.

volume = base * height
x = base length
A = base area + side area = x ^ 2 + 4 * x * height
solve this last equation for height
height = (A - x^2) / (4 * x)
plug into first equation
volume = x * (A - x^2) / (4 * x) = (A - x^2) / 4

Wouldn't it be x^2 * (A-x^2)/(4 * x) since the base is x * x?

1) enumerate all your knowns (x, A)
2) enumerate what you want (V)
3) enumerate equations connecting your givens to your wants (V=x^2*h, A=x^2+4*x*h)
4) solve for unknowns in terms of knowns and possibly other unknowns; you need N equations to solve for N unknowns (h = (A - x^2) / (4 * x))
5) solve everything algebraically (V = x * (A - x^2) / 4)
