Empathy is a social concept that we made ourselves. Just because it's possible for humans to be empathetic in a way that we decided to define it, does not mean that the universe itself actually feels empathetic. The universe does not care about are sorrows, but things that inside of the universe can.
What applies to the universe doesn't necessarily apply to things inside the universe. For example, as far as we are aware nothing inside the universe can travel faster than the speed of light, but the universe itself is travelling faster than the speed of light.
