>>11484347>My point was that flu and COVID-19 are different in fundamental ways. Absolutely, but without knowing more, the best we can do is rely on previous studies. Surgical masks helped with SARS as well, which is more similar to COVID-19 than influenza.
>One thing though - did the study compare the efficacy of masks alone, as it did handwashing? Again, the combo of handwashing and masks would cut down on airborne and contact infection (like getting sneezed at and rubbing your eyes after). But cutting out handwashing would show how effective those masks really are as a standalone tool - now with the threat of contact infection.I don't agree with this, because every measure should be taken, including handwashing. If masks plus handwashing show a benefit beyond handwashing alone, then the masks are clearly doing something. I've seen an argument that masks only work because they prevent people from touching their nose and mouth. So what? If they lower transmission rates, then they deserve consideration, whether they work through the intended mechanism or not.
>I do see that masks were the most effective method, but were they good for preventing a sickness, or preventing the spread of sickness to others? If everyone was wearing masks, then it really wouldn't matter (and this is enforced in some Asian countries). I've seen medical recommendations to wear a mask only if you're sick, which is ridiculous when we're dealing with a virus that can be spread during the long, asymptomatic incubation period. By the time someone realizes they're sick, they've already been spreading the virus for a week or more.
>>11484374Some people have to go out, anon. It's better to self-isolate right now, but there has to be exceptions. A hazmat suit would be great, but you've gotta work with what you have. Going to Wal-Mart specifically to buy masks to go sit in your basement would be silly, but if you already have masks and must go out for some reason, then it's worth it.
