Keep in mind that when the northern hemisphere is in summer, the southern is in winter. If you looked at the earth-sun system from the side during summer, with the axis adjusted facing straight up/down, you would see the sun is above the Earth and not exactly adjacent.
In other words, the seasons are caused by different intensities of light falling on the Earth. If light falls on a plane directly perpendicular to it, it will spread evenly. If it falls on a tilted plane it will spread more sparsely.
