The strategies don't significantly reduce the peak. It would take at best 18 months to find a vaccine, so we might as well do nothing and get it over and done with, reducing the stress on the economy.

Doing nothing leads to people getting infected and dying. But not before infecting other people. The economy can't work if too many people are sick or dead to produce anything.

I've read that between 15%-20% of cases require hospitalization due to pneumonia. Not sure if that means they require mechanical venitlation or ECMO or are just hospitalized and treated in non-ICU area. Also reading that while people generally feel sick for about a week or two, they're contagious for longer than that.

The problem is that you have 15%-20% of people infected, hospitalization rates exceed # of beds available and then without proper care you go from a 2% or 3% mortality rate to higher.

That's also not counting the number of people who are infected and *do* have other conditions/issues. Their mortality rate and need for mechanical vent/ECMO is much higher.
