Given the age of the universe, even thousand years is nothing on astronomical scales, but a very long time for technology to develop once the pace picks up. So the civilization can't be much behind us, and it would be an odd coincidence if it were around the same level technologically, especially since the more advanced they are better their observational abilities get. So they would likely to be millions or even billions of years ahead of us. We would be incredibly primitive compared to them, so they would probably think of us in the same way we think of ants or even bacteria or something.
