You can know a lot about a little, or a little about a lot, but not usually both.
When I first started working in hospitals I was shocked to find out doctors are functionally retarded when it comes to anything outside of medicine, which is fine because I need them to know about my illness or injury and not how to change the oil in my car.
Also as math and science matures you have to dig deeper and specialize to find that cutting edge then 100 years ago where you could be more of a renaissance man making breakthroughs in multiple fields.
