The key is that America controlled its immigration in terms of numbers AND origin. For the most part, this is still working - the US has higher median disposable income than almost every other country on earth. America (and many other western countries) need continued immigration to make up for the otherwise low birth rate, because they'd otherwise end up like Japan.
The problem comes when you take the Germany-style approach of opening the floodgates to unlimited numbers of immigrants from incompatible cultures, and then give said immigrants free apartments, etc, on the government's dime. The US's system has historically brought people seeking opportunity with a willingness to work hard (and integrate), while Germany's has brought hordes of Africans/Arabs seeking free shit while refusing to integrate.
