Cutting-edge science and technology is no longer accessible to the masses, so why should they be so invested in it? Besides, if what was discovered/invented was actually useful, then the scientist can make their money in both patents and lecture tours.

Yea but the same people that say that scientists and soldiers should be paid footballers wages also say healthcare should be free and defence budgets should be slashed.

The economics of football and major sports are easy enough for any brainlets to understand. People spend lots of money to watch that stuff. A handful of people would pay to watch scientific research.

I can see that slowly changing in some respects. SpaceX launches/development for instance are a step in the right direction.
