Despite the word 'map' being tossed around regarding it, it truly has nothing to do with actually coloring cartography maps. 4 color theorem applies only to a bounded, unlooping, nonrepeating flat surface, such as the boundaries of an image opened up in MSpaint.
It's easy to prove at least 5 colors are necessary on a section of an image provided the assumption that the image wraps around, as a projection of the earth would wrap around a sphere, but that kind of logic defeats "4 color theorem" so the 'rules' of where 4 color theorem actually works were changed to just be on arbitrary 2D flat surfaces or finite subsections.
