Did I waste my time on my masters, /sci/? I can talk about set theory but did I really waste all that money? Should I have just majored in English (I love writing) with a minor in math?

If the best you could find was $75K, you are definitely shit at presenting yourself, you are probably looking in the wrong places/fields, and you might want to take a public speaking course/find a recruiter. There is no excuse for you to be making under 150K

This is literally a meme. OP here, btw. None of my friends who also did math are making as much as I am, even. We're just not worth 150k like a doctor is. The stats back this up. I know because I've looked because I fell for the trolling on this board too. Many of my friends are like >>11469805 . If you think about it, why would we be paid like doctors to do set theory? No, the only place for us is in academia or managing databases

Most people talk about money because let's face it, jobs just aren't intellectually stimulating or interesting outside of academia, and there are very few academic positions so most people end up with jobs which not only have shitty wages but also sucks. Whereas most people studying math usually started with the idea of getting a job which is interesting at the expense of money. Then they realize they've been essentially scammed, and that they'll get a job with indeed extremely low wages but is also uninteresting and sometimes not even positively recognized by society (teachers... eww)

So yeah, people are right to worry about money and nothing else. Job perks and passion are memes, deal with it. The only people who were meant to land an academic job already knew it before even reaching middle school. Naive freshmen might as well stop studying science immediately and go into hardcore applied soul-sucking garbage like engineering or finance. Yes it's boring but it pays well, and the only jobs you can get if you aren't part of the elite are shitty jobs anyway. Might as well pick something that pays well, so you can afford free time to do whatever you want. Because time is money. Get it? I don't understand why it's so hard for dumb leftists to snap out of their dumb slave morality instilled by jews

I'm on a similar boat here, except that I have only my BSc in math and planning to get an MS. I think my job is more exciting than maintaining databases but still nothing crazy. That said, I have two main observations:
First, I see math more as my intellectual degree. What I will really be using when I have money and then just want to fuck off to some university and teach retards/to write books (in other words doing nothing all day, at least if you compare it to a real job). Seriously, I don't want to be 50 and then realize I spend all of my life just counting shekels like a fucking retard. I want to have a cute title to put next to my name when I publish my books on whatever bullshit 40 year old me wants to write about.
Second is that I see plenty of high finance positions explicitly look for math majors. But I'm talking about the real big money (and big stress) finance jobs. I'm more in the operations side of finance which I know I got not because of my degree but because I can code and I'm not retarded with statistics but who knows, maybe one day I'll want to really get into the lion's cage and go into investment banking or quant research and the fact that the winds are blowing in that direction will be of great use.

I agree, but I'm still getting my undergrad in Maths. I'm hoping to get into software development as a failsafe, and so for that I'm sort of banking on an unrelated degree being acceptable. I'm minoring in CS and have projects on github, including some websites and applications with the latest version of React.

Hey, can you tell me more about these high finance roles? Are they really only looking for math grads with decent coding skills + stats or do you need to know a lot of finance to get into?

I've seen some hedge funds post jobs where they explicitly say that they don't care if you don't know finance, they'll just teach you. One job post I saw on linkedin recently from a bank wrote that they do need mathematical finance, quantitative models and economics. But all of these did have coding skills and advanced excel as the main requirements. This is probably what you'll actually do day to day in these positions.

why are you asking the obvious? A math degree is not a meme if you don't do memey shit with it. I know plenty of math + CS / engineering double majors who have great jobs lined up at the door because they knew that the particular combination was really powerful, but that math alone can be weak coming out of undergrad. This isn't to suggest math or physics is bad, but that if you aren't a PhD, you aren't at the level of maturity where you can do nontrivial work for people. This is what you sign up for when you do a math degree. software eng (read: not really CS) and other engineering isn't as nontrivial, but it is as well supported by the industry, so those avenues make money.

I'm telling you as someone who eventually chose academia that math is powerful, especially if you double majored, but math undergrad or even a masters doesn't mean shit in the face of the PhD if you want people in stem to take the 'I studied math' seriously, whether it's a PhD in math or some other field.

I never got why people major in Math, I wanted to in high school but realized I just just learn it all for free

Engineering has a bit of a trade in it though, figured the loans for human interraction would be better put towards that
