It looks pretty efficient. One layer may not be able to capture all the light and the shrub needs to capture as much lught as possible even as the sun angle changes

Bonus. I keep pic and will look into if I should eat that but, I was wondering about the little tree next the big tree. It has spikes on leaves but they do not cause pain yet. Looks like it may be mean when older or dry. Can't get good pictures because rainy all the time. Bark is smooth, so far.
