>>11468132>South AmericaIt's a big region and depends a lot on the measures taken and the specific countries involved.
Mexico has been very slow to react and they are very close to America so I'm worried about that. AMLO seems to be using this to score cheap political points rather than actually worrying. If they axt now they can weather the storm just fine, they have very few cases and no community transmission.
Central America is one of the poorest regions and here the response has been mixed. In El Salvador you had the swiftest response of any country going into full lockdown with one case only but neighbouring Nicaragua seems to be in denial mode refusing to even test people.
As for SA proper, the Andean countries have been quick to react with flight cancellations and very few cases.
In the Southern Cone (Argentina, Chile, Uruguay) there has been a swift response too with mandatory quarantines, cancellation of events and travel bans, these countries are the quite developed so I think they'll be able to weather the storm at least for now.
The real question mark is Brazil.
It is the largest country, with the largest population (200 million people, dwarfing everything else in SA), and the most cases in the continent. So far the Brazilian president was convinced "it's just the flu bro" so unless he reacts quickly I'm afraid the virus will go out of control there as SA enters the winter season. If Brazil acts NOW, they can weather the storm just fine but if they keep refusing to act they may drag the whole of SA down with them. Brazil already has community transmission but it's refusing to go into lockdown mode.
