Ironically though this will probably be what creates the next pandemic. The West uses only a very small number of species as the primary providers of their food. You know these are chickens, cows, and pigs. There is of course a small percentage of acquisition from shit like goat, sheep, turkey, etc. On the whole though, our entire supply chain is reliant on those three animals.
Because cross-contamination between these three is well understood, we can minimize exposure to virulent diseases and we have a pretty good grasp on the diseases that these species are susceptible to mutate.
Sadly, our use of antibiotics is creating superviruses that will defeat any known antibody. Once an outbreak of one of these diseases occurs that can make the jump to humans SARS, COVID-19, MERS, etc will look like minor seasonal flues.
