Is there a tendency for pathogens to mutate into less-deadly forms, so they don't kill the host? I mean, after all, evolution ought to organism to spread out and survive and killing the host doesn't seem to help.

There is a tendency for pathogens to grow more virulent. The only exception is when the pathogen is nearly 100% lethal, then the less virulent strains survive simply because they won't exterminate the local population.
