Why do so many people need glasses nowadays? How did people throughout history survive without that kind of technology

The rate of poor eyesight is likey higher than ever. That being said there is still many things you could do before modern tech. Shit shoveller, and such. Also you could pop out a few babies at a younger age even before you go totally blind.

I kind of gathered this when reading about different cultures; people with a 'squint' were essentially disabled. Still makes me wonder, i tried driving (empty road) without my glasses and although i could see the general road ahead and large, obvious thngs, was really surprised at how much I was missing, plus any quick-moving things that could easily pass me by.

I guess i'm just wondering if we've "trained" ourselves to have poor vision in modern times, staring at books/screens near us from early age or something

True, I guess I'm kind of surpprised that good eyesight has not been selected for more strongly. In terms of evolution, not being blind seems like a big deal

People read more from an early age nowadays. Ths results in a lot of becoming myopic either purely from the enviroment or gene-enironment interactions.
The fact that only a small minority of myopic people were myopic since birth supports my argument.

Motion vision is largest aspect of anything physical and doesn't involve clear outlines or colours. You only need vision as good as a cat's to do anything physical and cats have pretty bad vision.

In fact vision is on a ratio between motion detection and colour vision. The better you have of one the worse you have of the other. That's why it's far more likely for men to be colorblind. Less colour means better motion detection and men did all the hunting in hunter-gatherer society.

I've read and used computers intensely from the time I was a toddler, but now (all the way at 30) I still have better than 20/20 vision.

Not that I'm complaining, but what gives? Is the "close up detail stuff is bad for your vision" an old wives' tale, or what weird genetic quirk do I have or thing might I have been doing to offset it?

Myopia is primarily genetic but there are epigenetic factors controlled by exposure to bright light (sunlight) during adolescence which results in higher cases in modern society where young people are spending more time indoors for study/leisure at those ages.

Also we actually check it a lot more these days and it's become more accepted. If your eyesight is only slightly bad and you can still get around you probably wouldn't have bothered with glasses even a couple decades ago. Myself and plenty of people I know wear glasses and only have mild prescriptions (-1.5 or less), they're just a lot easier to get these days and we're constantly reading, so it helps reduce eye strain. Going back to my school days or when I worked at a cafe I never bothered wearing my glasses, I only started wearing them regularly when I entered the 'adult' workforce.

I had good eyesight in my early life but slowly its been getting worse and i have had to go through alot of prescriptions so its not like they werent able to live their life normally for a short time
