Viruses don't have plasmids or a way to transfer genetic info to the next strain. All we are seeing right now is either a man made virus that has certain genes implanted into it or a virus that mutated into a highly aggressive virus due to the "almost" unlimited / abundant hosts it had to begin with, meaning that the virus doesn't care if it kills off one host it still has a plethora to infect.
