When hit with a situation like that, my advice would be for you to calm yourself down for a few days, think about all the options carefully for a couple more, and after picking the right one wait a day or two to see if it really sits with you.
This process takes a lot of time, and usually you don't have that kind of luck. Usually you need to choose really really fast... And you end up doing a thing that you regret later.
But it doesn't have to be this way. If you think about certain things, and life in general, in advance, when life does throw a curveball at you, you will be ready. This is what philosophy does for the most part. It's like Kung fu - you don't really think where to dodge when you see a fist, you just dodge like you trained a thousand times before. With philosophy it's the same thing - you don't hesitate what to do now, you just act like you were contemplating about it a thousand times before.
