To my knowledge, elementary functions are functions that can be written as a combination of polynomials, trigonometric, and exponential functions, as well as their inverses.
But why did we choose these functions as the base? Is it purely historical? Why didn't we include something like erf as an elementary function?
Does it actually mean anything to be an elementary function? It seems a bit arbitrary to me.
