Depends on how you define "living thing."

The current popular definition excludes viruses. See: >>11461323 for one reason. They also don;t do stuff like respiration, have a metabolism, etc.

Most terms associated with science came into use at a time when understanding was extremely primitive.

Bacteria are non living naturally formed nanobots, not even potentially conscious. Choanoflagellates and diatoms are not alive. Placozoa maybe is as it has patterns of hormone signalling using the chemicals that show up in neurons, but it has no neurons.
Fruit flies, meanwhile, are not just conscious but they have non-chemical programming preferences. Even nematodes can feel pain and show the hormones associated with ptsd after a few electric shocks

Humans put placeholder labels to make it easier to understand new information based on certain assumptions, but these antiquated and it takes time and debate to update them.

Its obvious our understanding of death and life is very primitive. We are all just a process or a potential. No difference between viruses, bacteria, us or the sun. Reaction and cycles

It's simple. If a million identical machines did the same things as a species did, would we treat them like living things?
We would not give a shit about robotic versions of cyanobacteria, but we might anthropomorphise robotic rotifers and we are already personifying robotic mammals.

It cant reproduce on its own, it doesn’t metabolize, it doesn’t grow in size. It’s not much different than a protein that carries with it its own genetic sequence, that is it’s multiple proteins that collectively carry their genetic sequence.
Everything else alive has complex metabolic and homeostatic enzymatic pathways.
