Anyway, I think it's best understood in this way. People who are not familiar with physical pain fear pain on the basis of the unpleasant sensation itself. People who have felt pain repeatedly, or chronically, fear pain on the basis of what comes along with and after it. ie, the functional effects, the thee effect on experience, the implication on self actualization, and how it relates to their value system. Suicide occurs when a person has been organized to a point of paralysis where the unpleasant situation is unacceptable. In some cases the relief of death is just the end of suffering, and sometimes it's some other kind of value. Generally the manner of suicide has to be in line with someone's value system, eg regarding loose ends, family, manner of death, effect on their broader environment. Very few people kill themselves as martyrs or as a way to punish though, ultimately I'd say if it's going to actually get done it comes from a place of clarity and acceptance, maybe apathy. Sometimes people convince it's a good thing that they'll be gone, or they try to set up a life insurance deal and make it look accidental. Obviously I'm still alive so I can't tell you the exact state in which the act will actually occur.
So pretty much fatigue, inescapable suffering, perceived inability to ever achieve one's goals or have the range of experience and activity which sustains a desire to continue. So you have:
-Loss of active component (feedback loops of gratification)
-Presence of negative component (feedback loops of misery and hopelessness)
-Presence of active component (the means to override the self preservation directive)
