I'm currently working towards a B.S in Mathematics and Computer Science. No I'm not dual majoring, this is a single major. I just wanted to know if I'm majoring in a meme. The classes I'll be taking through the years are the following: Calculus 1, 2, multivariable Calculus, Linear Algebra, Discrete Mathematics, Abstract Algebra. Intro to Computer Science 1 and 2, Computer Systems, Analysis of Algorithms, Elements of the Theory of Computation, Concepts of Programming Languages, Modern Algebra 1 and 2, Mathematical Logic, Intro to Analysis, Complexity Theory, Advanced Algorithms.

Do these courses sound like they'll make for an effective Theoretical Computer Scientist? Also I'm assuming I won't be cucked for jobs after I graduate because my degree says Computer Science but just to make sure this degree won't be detrimental to finding a job right?

It doesn't go very broad or very deep, but otherwise yes.

Certainly not. However, most of the easily available jobs focus more on programming skill than on your theoretic understanding, so work on that unless you are shooting specifically for the rarer options.

Well I said dual major in my post but what I really meant is double majoring. This isn't a double major it's a single major.

Might want to go harder on topology, number theory (take a grad course - there is no good undergrad number theory), and complex analysis. On the CS side, I’d actually recommend having some more systems down your belt since I feel every CS researcher should be able to more compiler theory / implementation and OS design, just as a pedagogical breadth requirement.

Ehhh depends on what your interests are. Modern CS theory draws from so many fields - you could go classic and stay with combinatorics, or you can make high powered topological and algebraic arguments these days given the crossover. Ultimately make sure you don’t skimp out on your mathematics, as you will find that having familiarity and maturity with *all* of mathematics will be more than important for CS (yes, this means don’t skimp out on analysis or measure, especially if you want to do anything related to randomness or approximation theory.)

Companies value internship experience more than personal projects. Get one internship for experience over the summer, and then focus on research with math or TCS professors.

Math+CS is one of the most natural pairings out there, especially if you do TCS.

Math + mathematical field is generally a double major that gives you a much clearer picture and much stronger grasp on both given exposure to ideas in different contexts. Also both physics and CS lack the time to adequately go through the large amounts of math needed for both, and it isn’t until grad school that a non double major would encounter more algebra, (actually nontrivial) graph theory, topology, etc. that is pretty well integrated into the study of these fields. Double majoring actually gets you into the nitty gritty of both. In the context of CS, you get the primer that you need to jump into reading grad level books and eventually research level material. Like, imagine studying communication complexity but not knowing anything about nullstellensatz.
