New states cause new memory associations (that's their purpose) so as soon as a brain cell moves it never forgets any of the previous memories.
So for any memory association memory or color of a stripe a neuron stores a value we call current. Each time a cell is active it sends a value from this stream back to the next neuron, then the next up.
So while only one link from the external world to the current memories travels through the dendrites, there are 8 links from the dendrites to every other neuron in the brain. So the maximum amount of wire capacity any neuron can hold is a tiny bit more than the number of atoms in a standard restaurant sugar cube.
