People of just above average intelligence are more likely to seek out the deep knowledge explaining our world. All the easily accessible sources of that are liberal. They don't have the intelligence to move beyond a surface level understanding or to be able to properly criticise their own beliefs. Whether people of very high intelligence also have a liberal bias I don't know, but in any case they are outnumbered by the just above average so this would explain it either way.
