I know how to solve but I don't understand it

I've a problem with understanding Math. For example I know how to solve differential equations, but I don't know why I'm solving them or what does the particular formula/method mean, what does the equation represent, what does differential equation mean(other than the word for word definition), why do we have them, etc. I asked my Professor, and he told me to stop being a smartass and learn the formulae and the method of solving like everyone else. What should do? I get that we do not have a lot time to study in a semester, should I do what he says?
