The 2008 Nobel prize in physics went to the 3x3 matrix.

Also, although Matt and Ben are credited with writing that movie, there was this one interview where they demurred greatly and they were like, "Yeah, ok. ~WINK~ We wrote that movie, sure, right. Mmhmm." Movie is obviously about me: the homeless guy who solved RH.

I would never ask my students to solve for eigenvalues of any matrix larger than 2x2. Alternately, I may ask them to find the eigenvalues of a large square matrix already in some triangular form, which is trivial and would demonstrate they truly read the material.

you can work with a 4x4 matrix if it is specifically constructed by the professor so that it will have simplifications etc, but in general working with a 4x4 matrix in an exam is absurd. Unless the matrix is specifically constructed to be easy, it will take 4-5 times longer to find its determinant compared to a 3x3 matrix. on top of all of this, it tells you nothing about how much a student knows about matrices, only how good a mental math savant they are.
