Is it worth pursuing a PhD program in the field starting at 23 y/o or should I go with a MsC first? How to become a based synthetic chemist?

Take into account that my background is PharmD, and I’m currently working on the synthesis of biologically active compounds in the lab at the time

I have no idea how masters work in anglo unis, but synthesis comes with clean glassware and learned intuition- practice, practice... Study your shit on TLC, learn to predict good mobile phases. Make friends with NMR , mass spect. IR/Raman techs. And most of all consult more experienced chemists, but also look up alternative reaction conditions on reaxys.com etc.

Depends on whether you like to be poor and unemployable. If the answer is yes then go for it. Its a gamble in the sense that at the age of 23 you can't tell whether you'll be happy to hole yourself up in a lab for an eternity or you'd prefer to have a decent income and a family at some point.

Good luck in your endeavor OP. Chemistry is based, at least you would know how to make LSD.

4th year in synthesis here. Working on a natural product that can cure blood cancer. Go from one failure to another, but in the end things eventually works. I'm happy with my choice, because I love synthesis and experiment.

You can go straight to PhD without MSc (in Canada and US), there's plenty of opportunities like that. But I warn you firsthand, PhD road is a thorny path with countless hardship, so if you think you can beat'em all, just try it. In the end it worth it

OP here. I’m working in my thesis right now to get the PharmD degree (I finished my courses last semester) and hopefully I will get the degree in august after presenting the results of my project.

It’s been 6 fucking years getting this degree and I always knew I was drawn to organic chemistry really. Working in synthesis has been so amazing that I’m just interested in keep learning about it. At this point I don’t picture myself doing anything else.
That’s why I would like to skip the MsC, because I’ve already wasted 6 years of uni getting a degree that is not exactly what I was looking for (realized it when I was too advanced).
Keep in mind that I’m from a third world country. What would you do?

I'm from southeast asian, a third world country, too. Take some shit English test and choose a professor who you want to work with. No need to be an eminent chemist (too competitive), there's many nice Synthetic chemists out there, so there should be at least one that want to work with you. Every PhD in NA will be paid for their work (as TAship or RAship), and it's usually low. But you spent all day in the lab, so you won't spent much money anyway.

My advice, study English so you could get a decent score and go straight to US or Canada. There is always opportunities for everyone if you work hard enough to get it

What else would I need to get involved in a PhD program in said countries (US/Canada)? Any special test like GRE/SAT is required at this point for applying? (I don’t know the context or the functioning of the the North American graduate system).

dont waste another 4-5 years on a chem phd, you already have synthesis experience. i suspect you suffer from "people wont see me as a chemist" syndrome. im purusing a phd degree in food science but all i do is synthesis, and I am first and foremost a synthetic chemist.

just find a job with your pharm deg, synthesis is fun and all but after your pharmD you should be focusing on establishing your life. apply at many jobs and highlight your synthetic background ( I do this all the time).

again, I would highly advise against pursuing a second doctorate degree. although if youre dead set on doing it, i believe you WILL need the toefl and most schools require (and filter you) by GRE scores, UNLESS you contact/or know/have good rapport with the professor and he or she is set on hiring you as a phd student
