Prime example: the recent black hole images.
Although I would believe you gain more out of having far away dishes (i.e. the moon) than having a huge amount of telescopes around the earth.
The principle is called interferometry.
It would probably only work for radio frequencies (~100 MHz ~100 GHz) as for higher frequencies (like optical) the synchronicity and position determination between the telescopes would have to be really precise.
