I am a writer who had an idea the other day that involved programming/coding. Unfortunately, I know pretty much jack squat about programming, can someone please explain the basics to me, or direct me to a source of information that “can”? Thanks.

Also, how has programming evolved over time?

That's a topic everyone has their own shitty loud opinions on, as applied to learning to program in general. But if your goal is to get your feet wet and develop a general idea of what programming is like quickly and easily, then yes, python is absolutely your best best.

A. Programming is the creation of a set of instructions to your computer that it executes flawlessly.

B. Your computer runs in binary, but accepts assembly instructions (like a programming language but unique to a CPU archetype). Binary is impossible to use, assembly is impractical
So people wrote upper level languages that get compiled into assembly that are easier to use, and moreso many upper level languages compile to a common upper level language then to assembly then to binary. Not important to know but hey.

C. Most (99%) of programmers never even touch assembly except in education. You will learn an upper level language first. Depending on brainlet level, begin with reading online/tutorials, then transition into attempting to create something. Programming is best learned by doing, and you will always be able to google anything you want to know. Syntax is like 5% of your job, the rest is learning how to put together complex systems of abstract data and googling error messages.

D. Begin with C# or Java. Python is brainlet research scripting language. A good first project is something like tic tac toe in C# console, then move up to something more involved like checkers in a game engine.

No. It's a slow language for fast people. Because you don't have to think about annoying side issues. You can just come up with an algorithm and directly implement it to test it. If you need speed then some autistic code monkey can translate it to C++ or something. The hardest part is coming up with the abstract idea of an algorithm in your mind, not implementing it.

For a beginner I recommend first learning C. It's a good basis to pick up any other language fast as it's very basic.

the first things we'd recognize as "programming" would be analog computers - sets of gears and physical linkages that transform an input into an output. think like, pre-computer mechanical rangefinders for artillery, things like that, or the babbage engine.

once we moved to actual digital, electric computers that you could reprogram on the fly, you could start to have languages. the very earliest "languages" were very low level languages - take a value from one register, do a simple operation on it like arithmetic or comparisons to other values, and store the output. a program would look like a very long list of instructions to read and write from memory addresses. not very readable.

there was also beginning to be splits in implementation of languages. you see interpreted languages, which read your human-written code and on the fly figure out which pieces of bytecode (a low to medium level way of interacting with the hardware) to execute; and you see compiled languages, which take your human-written code and figure out once how to create a piece of unchanging low-level code that has the same behavior and function as what you wrote.

I have a question to the C (or even lower level) programmers in thread. As a guy that does a lot of math stuff in python, running calculations, counting permutations, plotting etc, what are the benefits of learning C for me? I know that I can get better performance, but most of of the time this is not a problem. I imagine that I would choose python of something similar over C for most of the time even if I knew how to program in C.

Hi OP.

I was a beginner too who wanted to learn computer programming, but I was stuck and unmotivated until I realized the following.

Computers, and computer programs are tools. Tools are devices that help you do work. Physical tools, for example, often use mechanical advantage to amplify a force that you might need, either to lift something heavy (lever), or move somewhere quickly (car). This might make you wonder, what kind of mechanical advantage do computers give you, then? Well, computers are really good at doing the following things:

1. Doing something repeatedly
2. Calculating something
3. Sorting a set of things
4. Finding something in a set of things

Kind of like how machines can be divided into two types: Levers and Inclined planes, the advantage you gain from a computer program is based primarily on it's ability to do things repeatedly (and quickly of course).

So the best thing to do as a beginner, is to make a list of problems you have that you think a computer program could solve, or make easier, or however you want to phrase it. Personally, I like to track my performance, so I made a computer program that records, stores, and analyzes my reaction time automatically after the end of a session of a game I like to play- rather than doing it "manually" in excel.

Once you have the list of things you want the computer to do, start by making smaller console programs. Once you can make big console programs that store and retrieve data, then a GUI might help. Focus on the problem solving aspect of computer programming. What do you want to solve? What can the computer do to make your life easier? Automatically generate a list of folders? Log how much time you spend on certain programs each day? Retrieve and analyze financial data? Generate thesis topics? Use your imagination. Think about what you want- this is most important otherwise you won't stick with it because you won't need to.

Forgot to mention, probably the best book on the history of computer programming is by Herman Goldstine - The Computer. He was Von Neumann's assistant and helped develop the earliest digital computers and saw the transition from mechanical, to electro-mechanical, to fully electric (electric switches (transistors)) computers. He goes over the early history, the major players (boole, babbage), and also some of the technical aspects of what makes a program. Very insightful to see the evolution of such a complex machine!

If you get the chance, I would recommend tinkering around in assembly and learning as much as you can about the lowest-levels as possible so you have a strong foundational knowledge that you can build up from. Knowing about the circuits doesn't make it easier to write c++ code, but it does give you a greater appreciation of the tool you are operating, and opens you up to the possibility of discerning the effectiveness of hardware based on your knowledge of the relationships between hardware and software and what can and cannot have an effect on program performance.

also a tip from the pros: don't be shy about "boring" stuff like databases- they're extremely important.

One last thing: don't be embarrassed about using tutorials or outdated books. Use whatever makes it easier for you to understand how the program works. This will help you build momentum in the beginning. I've found lots of outdated books on C/C++/Assembly programming in college libraries that are very helpful even though they're from the 90s. Programming is programming. Often these books have never been checked out and some of the libraries might even give them to you for free if you're lucky ;-)

I don't know if you want to learn programming or just learn about it but,
A good place to start is "learn C the hard way" for the basis, they teach a lot of programming concepts that are fundamental across all programming languages, I think they cover what most CS students see in their first years.
Then "learn python the hard way", python (and similar) are good languages for solving general/easy everyday problems because they are easier to code than older languages like C. For larger more serious projects where performance matters languages like C++ and others are used, but those require a lot more studying because if you don't write them properly they can perform worse than if you used python for example, there's a lot of free courses for languages like c++ in youtube.
If you think math is related to science then there's also functional languages like Haskell that are very powerful if you only want to do math, and it's actually easier than learn than object oriented languages.

There is no "best" starter language, it depends what sort of programming you want to get into, but Python is both very easy and general purpose, so it is pretty good for a starter language. It is also what's known an "interpretted language" instead of "compiled". Basically, to make it easier for humans, instead of writing in a form that the computer can turn directly into 1s and 0s (like languages that translate well), Python needs an interpreter that manages the fact that different machines need the python code translated in a different way, unlike something less human intuitive, such as C++.

You could start with Python but contrary to what others in this thread suggest, most people that know programming advice against it for beginners.

Python in probably the easiest language, but at the same time its notation is the most different. If you ever want to learn another language you would need to unlearn all the bad practices you pick up from Python.

What writers get wrong is the nuanced stuff, like thinking that an alien computer could be infected by an earth computer virus.
Different earth computers (chipsets that is, like x86 vs 6800 vs SPARC) can't even run each other's programs, they MAY be able to compile each other's source code but even then maybe not (without modification).

As for how programming has changed, the best answer would that there has been (at the business / "enterprise" level) a push towards ever easier to write programs in which the computer does most of the work behind the scenes (this is called "abstraction").
That's not a new idea, the entire point of COBOL in the 70s was to try to have a simple programming language for businessmen
and the idea behind BASIC is the same sort of thing, but both of those made massive tradedoffs speed of execution and range of use ("extensibility" in computer speak).
The next big step up was Java [a bunch of other shit in between like python and ruby and whatever else], and now C#

What's your idea?
It's hard to talk about what's right or wrong about the depiction of programming in books because other than Asimov (where everything is really general and makes sense in a 1970s ruleset world) or say Snow Crash or The Diamond Age by neal stephenson are both vague enough to be correct.

However in movies what usually happens is you have retarded shit where there's "real time hacking" or a ton of utility and UI shit being shown that only tangentially relates to what's going on.
Mr. Robot is probably the least worst depiction of what actually happens with hacking: you see a couple lines of white text on a black screen, then the screen goes away, and you walk out of the building having just "hacked" the thing (read: stolen the payroll file, or changed the accounts payable file to include an entry with you)

If anyone uses music production software, you can write sections of the music then use a pencil or write tool and go back and highlight that section you just wrote and associate or assign it a color so you can zoom out and view the entire song as sections of a color coded song. When you view it in its entirety you would be able to visibly see patterns. Since binary is “impossible” for a human to use, which I totally disagree with, please consider this... a program that would allow you to view whole sections of code with specific operations that we already know what they do... oh stackoverflow ok that’s cool copy and paste this shit... so I could easily assign colors to whole sections of code and then zoom out and build whole programs based only on sections and patterns of colors of code and nothing to do with the actual code itself which would allow a chimpanzee the ability to build programs based on color and patterns and not a bunch of nigger wanna be geniuses holding the door shut cuz they want u to pay to play their faggot ass gay boyfriend games... time is the only thing holding anyone back. I think there were some other things that people have played with, like node/graph based programming, like in Unity or Blender, which you can say is similar to the graph coloring problem. And more experiments, like with interactive coding environments: IPython/Mathematica Journals, and whatever Lambdu has.

You basicly describing high level coding, but instead of using text, you want to use shapes with colors. That's a pretty neat general idea, and we have seen some minor attempts at something like this (picture related). Imagine a proper implementation of this in VR with 3D shapes etc.
