Undergrad Research

I've been wanting to do some research as an undergrad for 2 main reasons, 1)I actually want to do research 2)my gpa isnt the best and having some research under my belt could help my chances of going into gradschool for a masters. (I think)

My uni isn't exactly strong on research but has been getting better and better and now I may even have an opportunity.

My signals prof is going to start some research in control and filtering algorithms pretty soon, is there any way I can convince him to let me assist him? Maybe get a co-author or something (I don't really know how it works desu).

I've been the top student on All of his classes and he has personally commended my work on the projects he has made us do. So him letting me form part of his work team is not crazy right?

Anyways, if that doesn't turn out, what else can I do to get some legit research under my belt?

Can someone provide some kind of guide on this topic?
