When traders arrived in Alexandria, all of their literary materials were seized, copied by the library, and then in a sort of dickish move, the copies given to the traders while the library kept the originals. It's not known how much was lost in that fire but since most of the knowledge came from elsewhere, it's likely much of that knowledge continued to disseminate through the ancient world.
