I don't understand how any serious health professional can advocate for the position above.
Before you say some asinine shit, no one is claiming a shitty basic mask will provide 100% protection against micrometer sized particles. It's also understood the virus can spread through the eyes, and that the mask is better used to cover up sneezes and coughs by those already ill.
But having that all said. If the mask has a 1% chance of stopping some larger saliva droplet that would infect someone, or if it has a 1% chance of making someone not touch their mouth or nose when they otherwise would, or if it has 1% chance of preventing spread in any other case, this already converts to hundreds of transmission events being prevented at the world wide scale.
How the FUCK is it bad, AT ALL, for someone to buy a cheap surgical mask if they can't afford or find N95 grade or better stuff? How are they any better off not using anything? How the fucking WHO and the CDC promulgate this irresponsible kind of shit which will invariably lead to more disease spread?
