Are there people immune to becoming addicted??
Because in a way it is pure incompetence. Where the addict engages in copious amounts because it's so good to them, when all they need to do to even proffit more from it is engage less frequently, and yet the addict fails to... So is it related to intelligence? Can somone become too smart to become addicted, to anyhting?

I believe that might be the case for substances that can be addictive in a psychological matter. For example mdma, or lsd, or modafinil etc.
These drugs do not force a physical addiction in any way. If you know your shit you will not get addicted to them. You know you can use them from time to time in moderate doses and everything will be fine.
On the other hand you have drugs that do cause your a physical addiction, such as heroin for example. Your body will ache, you will sweat, your joints will feel fucked.

The difference is, with the first group you can only get addicted if you are not mentally strong enough to dose it accordingly but with the second group you will most likely cave in and use them again, to stop the pain and discomfort.

While intelligence does matter when it comes to the likelyhood of people getting addicted to things, its not the best predictor. Different addictions have different mechanisms and virtually everyone is capable of being addicted to something. They just need to be in the right environment at a particularly stressful moment to create the self feedback loop which the brain can't escape from. Addiction is actually quite well understood in cognitive neuroscience, but for some reason a lot of people pretend that it isn't.

Believe it or not, i am immune from drug/substance addiction. I realized I could do this when my ex gf cried to me that i was an alcoholic and she didnt want me to drink anymore. So i went cold turkey, and realized how easy it actually was. I've even been on addictive medications before and can take them and get off them very easily as well.

Ive even noticed i dont get high from drugs either. I do feel other effects besides anything good feeling.

But i do think maybe my drug addiction resistance probably may come from my extremely bad masturbation and porn addictions. They were so bad and so grave that it took nearly 30 years for it to finally burn out. I think what ever damage it did to my brain made all other drugs pale in comparison.

So in short, i think addiction is a human weakness. And one addiction can overshadow all the others.

addiction is simply an adaptation to your environment. although the rate of depression and anxiety is growing. so is the rate of happiness in many places. especially in europe where people have more ways of reaching each other and generally better quality of life.
