Medical journals will report studies with the most accurate data and results, but they won't inform you about what's happening around the world, in addition to the fact we can be certain medical professionals in China are being censored and results not to the liking of the CCP will never make it out. You also won't be reading about doctors or reporters being disappeared, or containment measures, or any of the more real-world stuff from a medical journal, so I don't see why you would exclusively stick to one source of information to the exclusion of everything else. Good news sources don't hype it, they just report and highlight it as frontpage news which it obviously is.
