not at all. none of your professors will know it and if you claim to know it you'll get stomped on by actual mathematicians that do

if you want to do group theory and chemistry, study mathematics first and chemistry later when you've done some proper work in math

What kind of research? It's obviously vital if you want to do X-ray crystallography. It also forms the basis for molecular orbital theory and other important concepts.

none of which is true. i've never met a chemist that knows group theory, let alone abstract algebra

they probably don't exist

I'm an undergrad and learned a bit in inorganic chem. The extent to which we learned it was fairly limited, but my professor made it seem like it was almost necessary. He also mentioned that grad students have to take an entire course on it.
