By the time we get space battleships, we're going to have good enough automated targeting that relative speed won't matter much and it's just going to be people watching screens to make sure they don't malfunction. Head-on fights will just be the better ship wins, surprise attacks will go to the one that initiates it 100% of the time if they aren't detected, and depending in how far into the future we're talking, you can also just slap some boosters on to a big rock and annihilate all life on a planet's surface

Tangentially related observation.

In the Halo universe, and I would say in most of sci-fi, human ships are often constructed with the bridge, or control center where the captain and vital crew are situated, are placed at the front/top of the ship. This mirrors current military crafts so that the command crew can visibly survey their surroundings and battle.

The Covenant have a different mindset and place their control room & commanders deep inside the space craft, protected by all of the other structures and machinery of the ships.

Is this a silly sci-fi concept or is there a practical and real world implication that could be seen in future military spacecraft?

The covenant style is better because you can just use screens to view what’s happening. The captain should be surrounded in a VR interface so he can see 360 degrees around his ship which he runs along with the AI. He crew is probably useless.
Sci-fi always underestimates how AI will run everything with the consent of 2FA from a person
