godawful at mechanics, almost changed majors
taking thermo/electricity/magnetism
infinitely better
should i change majors or accept i'm a brainlet? anyone else here be in a similar situation?

undergrad mechanics should be second nature to any physics person. graduate mechanics can be a pain in the butt though, with all that formal variational calculus and deriving euler-lagrange equations and whatnot.

anyhow graduate thermo and your jackson class are also pains in the butt so i have trouble understanding where you are at

i mean, you could just learn mechanics... that's what all of high school physics is for most people. did you miss that somehow? if so then maybe you are just feeling the result of your peers having a background in mainly mechanics and the other classes are more a level playing field.

anyhow once you start quantum mechanics it really helps to know classical mechanics. so it might behoove you to git gud at mechanics. for sure if you go to grad school you will have a much much harder mechanics class so just beware

my undergrad textbook in mechanics was Thornton and Marion and my grad text was Fetter and Walecka. another one i've heard of but don't know myself is Goldstein

Buy classical mechanics by taylor, a major portion of the problem in learning in learning physics is some author's elitism in the sense they skip lots of steps and obvious to them intuition, that book is the most clear book I have ever encountered regarding mechanics and I still use it to this day.
