An evolutionary reduction in severity will likely ensue if the pathogen has any “intention” of lasting for more than a year, at which point it’d just be another annoyance among many other “domesticated” diseases like syphilis or the cold. Speaking in terms of natural selection, pathogens don’t “want” to kill anyone, they only “want” to replicate, and for that to be sustainable on the long term, that comes with becoming a mere annoyance in terms of danger.
