Said patient after cured, can potentially keep spreading the virus as well as get re-infected in which case the treatment required is bigger.
As the spread stays on its exponential growth, it will put a strain and eventually collapse the medical infrastructure and that's when the kill count will sky rocket.
Failure to contain it within china means that when that happens, foreign aid will be denied as the rest of the countries will struggle with the virus.
Most importantly, the virus is alive and spreading exponentially, that means that the chances it has of mutating into something worst also grows exponentially.
