Won't happen, the vast majority of people (especially at a university) would be extremely intimidated by such a power move. If by some chance they do become aggressive, just ignore them entirely. It's not like they're going to try to beat the shit out of you for sitting down.

Cool, thanks. This is the first time this has occurred and I don't want to sit on the ground again. I should have noted that the person was a basketball American so that was why I was concerned about possible aggression.

Oh. Okay. Well at least someone ACTUALLY sat there. The saddest thing I have ever seen was someone sitting on the floor, the person said the seat was taken, then he just SAT THERE with nobody in the seat for the whole lecture.
