I think the details are a bit complicated, but when working as a money manager he made a bunch of bad trades, but instead of telling them the truth he lied to them and secretly rolled what was left of their money into other things (possibly using it to start his own company) which he then ran successfully using the price-hiking method and actually recouped all of his clients' money.
I honestly love the guy, but -- and I'm sure he knows this too -- it was wrong of him to lie to his clients. Even if he got out okay because he's a genius, you should always be 100% transparent with your clients. It's 100% their fucking money.
His real crime though was being a public asshole during the trump years, and I'm sure he will learn from that too. He'll be back and do great things.
