From my experience quantitative analysis is the real deal. The thing is that you are not predicting the market, you are just inputting a combination of trades that you estimate will give you a higher probability of making money than losing money. The way you estimate this is by looking at how much money those trades would have made had you made them for the past 10 years. It's all really simple stuff. The hard part is really having the energy to do this for a long enough time until you find some strategy that you can pull off and is not too popular and that you can market.
However, getting into the industry is extremely difficult and starting your own fund nearly impossible. I hope you a really good MSc in mathematics/statistics.
