i got into a few and made the wrong pick of which one in retrospect. should have gone to UCSB but i chose based on “name recognition”. now i realize that is a crazy strong program. either way i am doing ok in my postdoc

got into UCF for their Optics & Photonics PhD. it is a great program in the field and it should be easy to get a job afterwards, but I hope to get offers from other universities as I would not like florida's weather

why would you apply if you know you won't get in? makes no sense given there is an application fee / it requires time and effort to argue for them to waive the fee.

sounds like you just lack confidence. i didn't think i'd get into half the places i got into, but it turns out that grad admissions is much less competitive than the culture of undergrads. so you end up getting accepted to places out of nowhere. so keep that in mind and don't get down on yourself. if you did good work and have at least one or two good recommendations that can go a long long way

Idk. I want to do it more than anything else. I got into my subject late and my grades are middling and I don't have any research really. I just didn't have the time. I might get lucky because I think I have a specific interest and will applying to places where people do that work.
I just don't have much to show right now. And everyone seems so much smarter than me desu. I wouldn't pick me.
But I certainly don't want to give up. Idk mate.

well then if it’s what you want then it wouldn’t hurt to apply. but if you get admitted you should look at how the graduates of those programs turn out. even if their top graduates turn out to leave the field then you need to consider whether doing that for your prime years of life outweighs getting a head start outside the field.

for some people, doing what they love, if even only for a few years, is great. i would do that. but it’s not for everyone

If I go to a tier 1 ivy league for grad school will i get easy jobs, or is that mostly an undergrad thing? the university is maybe 10-15 in my field but i have offers from non ivies that are top 3 schools

Got kicked out of my msc in 2016 after I developed a drinking problem due to burning out and a particular event that occured. Just recovering after 4 years and finally applied to Uni of Calgary. My gpa was pure average but I had research and teaching experience. Volunteered for a prof for a bunch of stuff and he got me the positions without anyone ever asking to see my transcript. They were baffled when they saw it when telling me I should apply for grad school.

Anyway, hope to go into probability and stochastic differential equations research. I just want to get back to mathematics so badly.
