Mark my words, Hawking had it backwards. Black holes don't radiate mass away, they radiate dark energy.
Virtual particles appear from nothing and must conserve mass. Therefore some have positive mass and others have negative mass. Virtual particles appearing on the event horizon diverge--the massive particle is drawn into the black hole and the negative mass particle is shot away from it.
That's why there is so much dark energy in the universe. Black holes generate it.
