However, it's science based management, and high level system optimization is important. It is literally engineering (using the scientific method to achieve a practical goal), but much softer than many other disciplines.
You're an engineer, but don't expect instant respect for having accomplishments like "modified the manufacturing process of widget X to increase throughput by 4% and reduce jitter by 7%".
