1. birth order
2. androgen (hormone) and endocannabinoid (stress) response of mother on fetus
3. environment (macro)
4. circumstance (micro)
5. genes
It is true that gay men are disproportionately molested or raped at a young age. However, if you control for sexual abuse, it appears that birth order has the most significant effect on sexual orientation of the offspring, in particular male offspring. Think of how many gay men you know who have older brothers. What is interesting, about the birth order effect on males is that one of the things I've noticed anecdotally (with a sample size of maybe a few hundred), is that if the younger brother isn't gay, he will be much more likely to have ADHD, bipolar, schizophrenia, be "a nerd," or just weak/depressed/effeminate.
The birth order thing is fucking complicated though because what if a third youngest brother decides to have kids in spite of potentially being gay, and his first born is a male? I guess the question I'm asking is, what if "borderline" gay people forced themselves to have kids anyway? Would that reverse the birth order effect? I can think of at least a dozen or so people I've known or witnessed personally who look like repressed homos that had kids anyway (lots of christians), and what's interesting is that whenever that happens it seems like the birth order effect gets reversed, so instead of the younger offspring being gay, the oldest ones are.
Since you can be either masculine, feminine, or somewhere in between, there is a whole lot of variation as to what your offspring will be like. Also worth considering looking at "the will to reproduce,"- consider for example how many completely effeminate, heterosexual appearing/behaving lesbians you've seen in your life. Why are they lesbians if they are effeminate? Likewise for masculine men who pass as straight but also happen to fuck dudes. What makes them this way?
