2nd year student at med school. Thought this is what I wanted. But recently I've been picking up book after book on physics.
Then I look on here and y'all sound like some fucking geniuses.
Would it be plausible for me to drop out now and pursue physics? going back to school wouldn't bother me but shit I've been getting so damn horny for things like QM and QOCD. I haven't been getting as excited about stuff like the clotting pathway.
So anons. convince me to just say fuck it and drop out. Im roughly 150k in debt currently though so that's really the biggest thing holding me back atm.

jesus christ, just dont. pay off this crap and then maybe you can look into getting into physics. you claim to love physics after reading many books on physics but popsci trash isnt real physics. In physics, you will no longer be reading novels and micho cucku garbage, youll be reading math texts and physics texts (though I dont like most of them because they read like novels). An example is http://93.174.95.29/_ads/F116B9421B66220F909DB64ED8661069 which concatenates most of what you will learn first year except the elementary E&M (IMO Morin is one of the best authors on lower-level physics). Read through it and try some of the problems and then say whether or not you are up for it. What ive seen is that physics is very closely tied to mathematics and if you do not love the latter, then there is no hope for you in the former.

I didn’t think that the physics I was reading was pop sci. Shit. I am halfway through a Lin Alg book and it’s not too bad though, how far am I from actually getting into the real shit if I’m there though?
I’ll try to find that Morin book on amazon later today though. Thanks

Fuck morin, don't listen to that fucking idiot anon, look, I'm a geophysicist, and I'm going to assume straight up that you want to LEARN physics and not waste a year if your life on a shitty classical mechanics text like morin which is only used at around 5 universities in the country. The reason why morin is used and people say good things about it is because they had morin as a lecturer, and I can guarantee you anon that wasting a lot of self study time on an overly rigorous pedagogical pseudo mathematics/physics text will be a waste of time. Look, I posted a gif of the 7 main textbooks that you need to buy that will allow you to tackle all of undergraduate physics and even graduate level physics unless you decide to be a complete fucking idiot and go into theoretical physics where you have to deal with making no money and abstract proofs all day everyday.

The first is a very great math methods text that covers lineal algebra, calculus, odes, complex analysis, tensor analysis, differential geometry, topology, and all that other good stuff that is considered estoric mathematics, it even has solutions to half the problems in full detail, after you get through the math methods book you can honest to god atarr working through the physics textbooks because that will suffice no lie.
That ode book is good because to set up odes is very important in research and it was made by ams and trust any math text made by ams the american mathematical society which is primarily for university students will be incredibly exhaustive and knowledgeable, also I pirated it and it's the best ode text I've come across so far, none of that bullshit but it has real research problems in it and it takes you through the pedagogical steps necessary to to do real ode mathematical modeling as how it's done when you are programming or modeling a system on paper. The pde text is the best ode text I know and I would trust 1000 dollars on that pde text.

Taylor is the best undergraduate level classical mechanics textbook, if you don't believe me the go to amazon and look at the reviews on it, it's an amazing text that teaches you how to do physics and think like a physicist. Electrodynamics by Griffiths is self explanatory look at the reviews itself, amazing, I used it for a course on applied machine learning algorithms towards geophysical electromagnetic methods, it's a great book, a wonderful book, you should try and buy Purcell electromagnetics just to read the thing because reading purcell + griffiths problems will help you learn a lot, townsend is excellent as a first course to QM for junior or senior, you can always start though with shankar which is more mathematical and true to how QM is done on paper buy townsend will suffice and I say that because both are great it just depends on what you are looking for so I guess buy both or one, good thing about shankar quantum mechanics is that all the math is explained in the 1st chapter which is around 90 pages of pure linear algebra and classical mechanics, great thing about townsend is that he'll tell you a cool story that gets you hooked while not being robotic like fact presenting shankar albeit shankar is great as well, also just to say townsend is used for one of MIT's grad level chemistry courses so that says a lot. Reif thermal physics is the best text, the reason why people hate it is because reif talks a lot, but I can tell you that if you are self studying physics you will want someone to talk a lot and explain EVERYTHING to you leaving no beds unturned, you will appreciate reif and you will love reif for how nice he was in explaining everything, you can even use reif as a reference text, yes reif is commonly used as a reference.

The point is that most likely you ain't going into a phd physics program studying theoretical physics, so don't overthink everything, go through those 7 books, finish med school and make some money and live

Also unlike what that other guy said, you don't neccesarily have to be good at math to be a great physicist, trust me on this one, you just have to be sufficient enough to do the physics, a majority of physicists are applied physicist and not theoretical physicist, what I mean is that you don't have a super majority of physicists working on black boards doing mathematics and proofs and all that jazz, a lot of the time is you setting up an experiment and doing some programming. For example I got all c- grades in my mathematics courses but I got all A's in my physics courses, you don't have to get a degree in mathematics nor do you have e to love mathematics, mathematics is just a road to physics, whether or not that road is a bumpy road or smooth road that takes little or a long time to cross is up to the individual, but those math texts that I listed especially the first one will carry you through undergrad and grad school (depending on your speciality).

Purcell is good because of Purcell writing the entire textbook, not morin because that idiot only added more problems to the textbook and some solutions, if morin's classical mechanics textbook is so good then why is his book rarely used outside of harvard as opposed to Taylor being used in many north american, south american, and canadian universities? Morin's book isn't even used at MIT for gods sake, it's a horrible textbook that teaches a physicist how to think as a mathematician when tackling physics instead of a physicist tackling physics, and for self study morin is a stupid choice, one will learn infinitely more from Taylor as opposed to morin due to how much morin cares about being so proper and mathematical in his writings, that book is better suited for mathematicians as opposed to physicists.

Are you fucking serious? I have never met a physicist that has take single variable calculus, multivariable calculus, linear algebra, theoretical linear algebra, numerical linear algebra, ordinary differential equations, thoeretical ordinary differential equations, numerical ordinary differential equations, partial differential equations, theoretical pdes, numerical pdes, applied and theoretical complex analysis, functional analysis, applied functional analysis, computational functional analysis, real analysis, differential geometry, topology, proofs, tensor analysis, multi function multi variable calculus, vector analysis, etc. Every single physicist that I know of personally has just taken a few of those courses and has learned the rest from the physics or from mathematical methods textbooks, please stop lying to that med student, no physicist needs a fucking masters or phd in mathematics to do physics.

these are all standards

nah its used all over, I go to a canadian university and its preferred over there over taylor. Morin's method of writing is clear, concise, rigiorous and has many problems with a lot of insight. if you are ever bored on day and want a challenge, you will always have some problem in there that will stump you. Plus it pretty much covers everything you need to know for classical mechanics including relativity

no I think if he really does find interest in physics, he should be equally interested in what makes great physicists, the math. Von Neumann understood this when he set out to develop the math behind QM and so did paul dirac and every other decent physicist worth his salt. If you arent too keen on the math however, Its perhaps for the best that you look toward engineering which is more applied and less rigorous- many do.

As I said above, no physicist is an expert in all those fields but they must have studied most of them with some degree of rigour. I think a lot of grads taking difficult math classes misremember the amount of rigour they encountered, maybe I just got autistic profs but compared to the grad courses I've taken the lvl of rigour is somewhat similar (ofc if ur talking about the core calc and lin alg classes they push all the retards thru that's a diff story)

Hey OP, don't listen to that anon, he's an elitist and I can tell that from his way of typing and communication he has never taught a course of undergraduates before nor has he ever advised graduate student on research, trust me on this one, as someone who is old and has plenty of experience helping others, and teaching others, take that gif and take my advice, and keep this in mind, if physics is supposed to be rigorous then it would no longer be called physics and instead be called mathematics, the lack of rigor and expression of shortcuts and creativity is what has made many physics breakthrough, and most importantly is what makes physics fun for everyone.
