I was reading recently that iron oxide doesn't have an odor. This piqued my interest as I've often smelled rust in the air as part of my job and think it has a distinctive smell. Is it odorless because the tests involved to determine odor only test if an object has a volatile smell? i.e if left undisturbed there is no smell. Is it just trace elements that I can smell?
