If I understand correctly, it's like a woman being able to birth a clone of herself.
Sure, the genes get to live along, without recombination, but for bigger lifeforms, all soma would be lost and replaced.

Nope. It's just biology. It's limited to less "complex" vertebrates, and most of those can only regenerate their tails. If it was biologically possible for higher evolutionary grades, that trait would have been retained.
