Because quite frankly there's a lot of stuff in QM that you don't need to know unless you go into very niche research fields.
For example, I can't imagine a nanoscientist needing to know about CG coefficients and the irreps of SU(2), spherical tensor operators, etc.

Im a physics major that took 5 quantum mechanics courses. I took a semiconductors and nanomaterials course in the ECE dept and got an A because all the qm was childs play while everyone else had trouble.
